What is a child care centre? A child care centre is a place where care is provided for up to 60 children on either a part-time or full-time basis. Child care centres must be licensed before they can open. What training does a licensee need to have? No special training is needed to hold a licence. However, if the licensee will be in the centre and have responsibility for children s/he needs to have the same qualifications as staff members. What qualifications do staff need to have? Staff working with children need to hold Child Care Services Certification. The level of certification is based on an assessment of each person’s academic achievement in Early Childhood Education. The required level of certification and amount of experience vary according to the level of responsibility each staff member has. How many staff are in a child care centre? The number of staff required varies depending on the number and ages of the children in the centre. The younger the children, the more staff are required.
