To ensure that the health of people who occupy institutional settings is protected from illness and injury, Environmental Health Officers (EHOs) carry out routine inspections of the following types of care and/or institutional settings.
Inspections are necessary to ensure that those in care at these institutions are not exposed to hazards that may jeopardize their health and safety. Institutional settings have people being cared for who are often at an increased risk of disease and illness. This is especially the case with young children and the elderly.
Inspections occur annually for personal care homes, nursing homes, family child care homes and schools. Child care centres are inspected twice annually by EHOs.
